My journey from student to biomedical project line engineer

My fascination with life sciences originated with the movie, Outbreak (1995). It sparked my dream to work for the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with the world’s most deadly diseases—to help cure them. With this aspiration in mind, I started my bachelor’s degree at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA in Biomedical Engineering, concentrating on Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials.

My senior design and thesis advisor, Dr. Elisabeth Papazoglou, worked extensively in bio-optics. My background with Edmund Optics (EO) and knowledge of both biology and optical fields brought me in contact with Dr. Papazoglou. The research focused on "Non-Invasive Optical Techniques to Diagnose and Treat Skin Diseases such as Psoriasis and Melanoma". The research has proved invaluable to what I do every day here at EO and I owe much of that to Dr. Papzoglou, who unfortunately passed away due to breast cancer in the fall of 2011.

Through Drexel University’s Co-Operative Education Program, I began working at Edmund Optics as a Research and Development (R&D) intern in 2006. While in that position, I designed test beds and systems for customers, and also developed new products for the company. After a year, as a Product Line Marketing intern, there was a need for someone dedicated to creating product demonstrations and assemblies for global tradeshows. Once the demos were completed, there was a need in EO’s Quality Assurance (QA) Department at the Pennsburg, PA facility, to standardize test procedures and assist with quality tests.

After finishing my degree, I knew I could find a nice home and great place to work at EO. I was offered a position as a Product Support Engineer, at EO’s Barrington, NJ facility, where I already had exposure working with summer interns in putting together tradeshow demos. After that experience, I essentially knew how to assemble every single demo present at global tradeshows and this resulted in attending all of the shows and putting together the projects. At the tradeshows I interacted with both vendors and customers and qualified new products for the catalog and website. I was beginning to see what EO’s customers needed and wanted in the Life Sciences market.

During my time at Edmund Optics, I have been happy to branch out and learn more about different departments. I was always asked what I was interested in and where there was a need for help in the company. EO has always made it easy for me to enjoy what I do, and as the Biomedical Product Line Engineer at EO’s Barrington, NJ facility, I am even closer to my aspirations. I have been researching innovative optical techniques in medical imaging systems for microscopy and spectroscopy to noninvasively diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer, diabetes, etc. I am currently working on bringing EO to the forefront of non-invasive medical techniques and procedures by utilizing light and advanced optics.

Stephan Briggs is the Biomedical Product Line Engineer at Edmund Optics' Barrington, NJ, USA office. He is responsible for researching innovative optical techniques in medical imaging systems for microscopy and spectroscopy to noninvasively diagnose and treat. Stephan previously held positions as a Research and Development intern, Product Line Marketing intern, and Product Support Engineer at the EO Barrington, NJ, USA office and Quality Assurance intern at the EO Pennsburg, PA, USA office. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Engineering Management at the Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA, USA and holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, with a concentration in Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials from Drexel.
