楔形稜鏡可單獨用於將雷射光束偏離特定角度,或者成對用於光束轉向應用。單一楔形稜鏡對入射光束角度的轉折能力以屈光度界定,屈光度為1表示在1m工作距離內將光束轉折1cm。

兩個楔形稜鏡可作為變形稜鏡對用於光束整型(以修正二極體輸出的橢圓形)。或是可利用一對楔形稜鏡,在完整角度 4θ 描述的圓形範圍內轉向光束,其中 θ 是與單一稜鏡之間的偏差。這種光束轉向是以獨立旋轉兩個楔形稜鏡的方式完成,一般用於在成像應用中掃描光束至不同位置。

注意:光束偏差以度及屈光度為單位顯示。一屈光度代表在距離稜鏡 1m 處出現 1cm 偏差。
