Axicons Review

Axicons are conical-shaped optical components used to create a ring-shaped beam. Available in plano-convex and plano-concave versions in a variety of apex angle options and anti-reflection coatings, axicons are ideal for a wide range of research and development applications. Kristin Vogt, Product Marketing Manager, explains the benefits of these unique optical components in this easy-to-follow product review video. To learn more about axicons, read our An In-Depth Look at Axicons application note.

Video Transcript

(7.5s) Planoconvex axicons feature one conical surface and one plano surface. An axicon is used to produce a non-diffractive, ring-shaped beam that increases in diameter over distance while retaining a constant ring thickness. This approximation of a Bessel beam is ideal for a wide range of medical, research, measurement, and alignment applications. (1.2s) Axicons can be used in optical coherence tomography, atom trapping, and laser eye surgery systems. (6.5s)
